If you buy oats in bulk, it's important to check your pantry. Over 63,000 pounds of Grain Millers rolled oats were recalled due to concerns about plastic contamination. The FDA has issued a warning about the potential health risks.
Which Oats Were Recalled?
On February 11, 2025, Grain Millers issued a recall for two of their oat products:
-
Regular Rolled Oats #5
-
Weight: 1,800 lbs.
-
Lot Number: 810239153
-
Code: 250131N-1
-
-
Quick Rolled Oats #21
-
Weight: 1,600 lbs.
-
Lot Number: 811176
-
Code: 250202N-2
-
In total, 63,200 lbs of oats were recalled, consisting of 20 sacks of Regular Rolled Oats and 17 sacks of Quick Rolled Oats.
Where Were the Oats Sold?
The affected oats were distributed to two states:
-
California
-
Indiana
Since the oats were sold in bulk, they may not have been individually labeled, making it difficult for consumers to identify the affected products.
Why Were the Oats Recalled?
The recall was issued because the oats were found to be contaminated with plastic pieces. Foreign materials can enter food during production, posing safety risks if consumed. The FDA has classified this recall as a Class II risk, meaning that consumption may cause temporary or medically reversible health consequences, with the possibility of serious health issues being very remote.
What Should You Do?
Although the FDA terminated the recall on April 25, affected oats may still be in consumers’ homes. If you suspect that you purchased any of the recalled oats, here's what you should do:
-
Do not eat the oats.
-
Return them to the place of purchase, or
-
Dispose of them.
If you buy oats in bulk, it’s recommended to check with the store about the source and product details to ensure you haven’t purchased contaminated goods.
